    Going shopping

I can recommend a book by Dave Stewart (keyboard player with Hatfield and the North, Bruford, and his duo with Barbara Gaskin, not the Eurythmics guy) called "Musicians Guide to Reading and Writing Music". It was published quite a while ago, so may only be available used.
  2. Also a wonderful song by Jimmy Webb. A couple of years ago I had the great pleasure of seeing him in concert; just him, a piano and so many great songs. It's been covered by many people including Joe Cocker, Glen Campbell and my favourite, jazz great Sheila Jordan. Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden did a lovely instrumental version...
  3. I found this video which shows how to install the P-Rails with the Triple Shots - As I said, you can use regular volume pots with the Triple Shots, but if you had a push-pull pot you could wire it for the Peter Green out-of-phase sound. Even more options!
  4. From the pictures it looks like you have SD P-Rails with the volume pots for each pickup having a push-pull arrangement, though I can't tell from the picture if it's for coil splitting or series/parallel wiring. A good way of getting the most out of a set of P-Rails is to use the Triple Shot mounting rings. I used them in my H150 Special, and they give you the following options from the two little switches on the ring - humbucker (coils in series). P90 coil, Rail coil. humbucker (coils in parallel). Something to be aware of is that you might have to shorten the pickup lead quite a lot to get it to fit in the pickup cavity. If you use the Triple Shots you can use a regular volume pot. I found I was using the P90 setting most of the time so I eventually replaced the P-Rails with a set of Phat Cats. I still have the P-Rails, all I need is another guitar to put them in... 😁. Here's a pic of the H150 Special with the P-Rails and Triple Shots.
  5. "Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda!" as we say in Wales. If you're wondering how to pronounce that apparently random arrangement of letters here it is... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imL-oAFr6ZU Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year!
  6. I'm part of an organisation (Jazz Steps) that promotes jazz in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. One of our projects is to jointly promote gigs with Inspire (who run the libraries in Nottinghamshire) in three of their libaries, most recently singer Zoe Gilby's quartet. I was pleased to see guitarist Mark Williams was using a 1990 H535.
  7. The Heritage pickguard reminds me of the ones on the old Epiphone Rivieras and Sheratons.
  8. Playing in a band should be fun, and that sort of behaviour is totally unnecessary. Getting gigs is hard enough, without alienating the person who runs venue. Luckliy the four of us in the Pete Donaldson Blues Band get along well. On the subject of guitars, do you have any particluar idea of what you want? I have a couple of H150s that aren't getting much use - a Trans Black H150CM and a Gold top H150 Special (a slightly thinner and lighter body). I've changed the bridge and tailpiece on both for Nashville units, and reinstated the original Schaller pickups - at one time the Trans black had a pair of Phat Cats in it, and the Special a pair of P-Rails with the Triple-shot rings. Hmm... I might put them back in. Let me know if you're interested. Yamaha make fine guitars - I used to have a PAC1511 Mike Stern model, a bit like a Tele on steroids, with a Seymour 59 in the neck and a Hot Rails in the bridge.
  9. Hi Mark, good to know you're out there playing. If you're in the market for a new amp I have one that might be of interest - a Seymour Duncan Convertible 2000 1x12 combo. I need to make some space as I've ordered a 633 Drive King, and the Seymour just isn't getting used. If you're ever down Nottingham way pop in and give it a try. Send me a message if you're interested.

  18. Vocalists, eh? In my experience you're lucky if they have a decent mic of their own. Here's a thought - do you know anyone who has a small PA you could hire, possibly another local band? When we (the Pete Donaldson Blues Band) gig, we use a mate of our drummer to provide a PA for a fifth of what we make on the gig. If he can't do it, we use my PA, which is a modest affair I've put together from a mix of second hand and new bits. I got a Studiomaster Powerhouse 300 8-channel mixer-amp (300W per channel, built in digital FX) for a couple of hundred quid via the local paper and a pair of RCF cabs (12" plus horn) for about the same from a local shop. Pete has his own Shure SM58 plus stand and a Peavey powered monitor. I bought an SM58 and powered monitor for myself. This setup is more than adequate for pub gigs. I suppose my point is that it's possible to assemble a usable PA for significantly less than £1200. Anyway, best of luck and I hope you get it sorted so you can use that 555 in front of an audience!

  20. I cheated a bit with the pic, it's from the High End Guitars website, though it is the actual guitar. The service from Jason at High End Guitars was excellent, it was more like getting a bespoke suit than buying a guitar! Make an appointment, go along and talk about music, favourite guitarists and life in general and he will find the right guitar for you! They also stock Santa Cruz acoustics - I didn't dare try one out, otherwise I might have left with two guitars instead of one... Apparently most people prefer the guitars without scratchplates, but I really like the stained flame maple - a touch of class.
  21. Hello all, I have more guitars than is strictly necessary, but a couple of months ago, when I found out that the UK distributor for Heritage Guitars was a few miles away from Nottingham, I had to investigate... I now have a very nice Almond Sunburst 535 with HRW pickups and Tone Pros bridge and tailpiece. It makes sense to join the owners club, so here I am! I gig occasionally with a local blues band and as the other guitarist uses a Strat, I've used a Les Paul or 335. For the last couple of gigs I've used the 535 and have been very happy with the sound I'm getting! My main amp is a Mesa Maverick 1x12, pedals include a Zendrive 2, Cry Baby, Fulltone Super Trem and a Tech 21 Boost DLA. Cheers, Bob Meyrick
