Longtime guitar player (41 plus years).  I come from a guitaring family (grandpa was a luthier [he made my my first guitar when I was 6 years old], who played jazz guitar in dance bands,  and my uncle has been playing since the 1960s [his youngest son also plays guitar]).  I used to play semi-pro in heavy rock bands in the 90s (lead and rhythm guitar, and lead and backing vocals), but nowadays, I get my band fix in a local church band.  I'd love to play in a jazz combo, or another loud, rock band, but at 56 years old, it's hard to get into new bands - especially when there isn't much networking between musicians where you live.

I also used to play brass instruments (valve trombone, and euphonium) in both jazz and symphonic bands, till the end of my Sophomore year of college.  The musical theory definitely helped me progress faster than normal at learning how to play guitar.
