Supro

Lots of speculation about this and this Supro rebirth has been internet buzz for some time. AFAIK, Bruce Zinky is stilled involved as head of engineering, (he sold the rights to the Supro name and the company that bought them retained his very capable services). it would seem they are in kind of a no man's land as many of the classic old Supro designs are already addressed in near exact reproduction elsewhere in the boutique amp market. Why retain someone of Bruce Zinky's talent if you aren't going to at least improve on the old, and then you run afoul of the purest for wrapping it up in a vintage Supro wrapper. The competition in the smallish, no-compromise combo market is TOUGH.

This will be interesting. Valco/Supro designs are pretty basic, at least until you get into the late 50s/early 60s when the guitar market started to explode. Then they started to add reverb and tremolo, and up the power. All the ones I've seen are pure p-t-p wire, and most were somewhat of a spaghetti fest inside!

At PSP a couple of years ago, we had my 53 Valco and compared it to a Vintage47. It wasn't an exact replica, but you could definitely get the family resemblance. Nobody was going to confuse the sound with a Fender or a Marshall.

I had a Supro Thunderbolt head only many years ago. That thing was great... I ended up selling it to our bass player after I got a Dual Showman, that is one I wish I'd kept. Put a boost in the front and great tone was ensured.

all the more common amps have been done-to-death on the boutique market, it was only a metter of time before ppl jumped on the Supro & Magnatone wagon

they are very cool amps for sure, real ones can be hard to find. for certain models

and the Led Zep connection surely adds to the mystique

that clip above sounds awesome!

all this talk of supros & teles inspired me to dig out my MIM tele & plug into the supro, it's a great little recording amp, IMO

anytime I've tried to use my phone to record it sounds like crap...so I threw a drum loop into garageband & miked it up instead, the amp gets a nice grindy sound:
