NAMM surprise, blessing and new project! Naked wood warning!

Millennium Maestro

Recommended Posts

So I was blessed to attend NAMM again this year, on day one Jim looks at me and says "Wanna go look at some wood?"

Sure!!

So off we go, I get to see Jim work the floor and go and see other vendors he has relationships with. Jim has a way of making everyone feel important and I was lucky enough to be part of it, but can you imagine what its like to be looking through wood blanks with "The Master".... It was frickin amazing! Jim loves good wood and flames. This one guy from California had some planks he was drooling over.

So we go to another booth, I see this board with some really cool flames and I am like "Jim, you see that chevron pattern... I really think wood like that is cool!"

The Master starts, I could do this with it and we could do that with it and you could have this..... "You should buy it!"

I bought it.... now I have to figure what I want built! I didnt know that was gonna happen for sure!

Anyways, I wanted to share a really cool moment in my life! Hope you enjoyed!

Awesome story, Guy! You have developed a great relationship with Jim, fueled, in part, I'm sure, with your utmost respect for the man (not to mention getting him schnookered on Miller Lite at a few PSPs, haha). Keep us posted on your plans for that awesome pair o' planks!

Yeah... Jim had worked virtually every job at Parsons Street before he was made the Plant manager back in Gibson days... the man knows his stuff.

And to be in his presence when he's sharing some of that knowledge is magical. There are a lot of people at NAMM that realize this.

It's great to hear your story, Guy. And.. that's some nice wood too.. ha

spectacular Guy. You did the right thing . That grain is spectacular, certainly worthy of a Heritage custom order. The pattern is breathtaking. Looks like a good candidate for that Joe Perry Boneyard natural color pattern (not sure what it is called) but that flame would pop right out.

What a fabulous experience. So many lessons to be gained by simply observing. Respect of peers, technical knowledge, imagination of what can be, and commitment. The list of expertise which Jim, and his revered associates, possess is endless.

Thanks for sharing Guy. Looking forward to seeing how your vision materializes into something very special.

OK so with a new (and unexpected) build, NAMM only cost you $2,500!!!

But are you going to do when a "wood legend" tell you, "Buy, it!".

I might have even been able to sell that excuse to my wife!!!! Congrat Guy, I can't wait to see what you are going to have commissioned with that wonderful Chevron grain!!!!

the "problem" with the grain on that wood is that a typical humbucker style guitar would hog out the most dramatic parts. perhaps this is the Bass you've been wanting (wasn't Jim doing the heavy lifting on those anyway?) or limited edition 137 with a maple cap and a single bridge P90?

It's be a shame to turn that seam into sawdust.

As previously mentioned, great story; very nice chunk of lumber. My vote: Solid flame maple H-137, single P90, with a wrap-tail, in 2-tone tobacco burst or vintage wine burst. Edit to add: and use a chunk of the waste area to make a matching veneer for the headstock (inlaid logo)
