Trying to dial things in with a bunch of new gear in a new room.

We moved to Vancouver Island last week which means yet another new room. It's harder to get my hands on gear here so I stocked up on a bunch of new toys before we left the lower mainland. I've been testing things out all day and I've really struggled to contain the low end. This is the first thing I've cut that feels even close.

The setup is my custom H575 into a TC Electronics Arena reverb pedal into a Gallien Krueger MB200 head powering an Earcandy ported 1x8 Mr Watts cab loaded with an Eminence Beta 8A speaker. I recorded it with a Sennheiser e609.

Sounds lovely! Big fat jazz tone and a nice touch. For that low end rumble, maybe move the sennheiser back about six inches?

Where are you on the Island? i get up to Victoria quite a bit as I have family there. I visit a cool geetar shop there every year on Fort st. last time I was there the dollor really worked in my favor and it was like getting %25 off on any guitar they had.

A bit of a departure for you to mic rather than go direct? It's a beautiful sound, different, more lively maybe.

Everything I've done over the last 2.5 years has been an effort first and foremost to get around some horrendous power problems. I wasn't going direct because I liked it as much as it was my best opportunity to reduce the noise. Now I'm finally in a place with proper wiring and it's all working much better so I can experiment a lot more.

Always love to hear you play, Jim. Big sound for an 8" speaker, regardless of cab, etc. Ran it thru the DAW. I can hear the huge bottom end, easy to hear how that might get away from you. Still, that is some HUGE sound right there. Yummy.

Thanks guys. Now that we're living with proper wiring and clean power again it's been amazing how much easier it's all gotten. I've made enough progress in the last couple days to be pretty confident that I can finally get to work on the new album that I've been promising for the last couple years. It's a real joy to be able to do some recording without having to constantly fight an almost constant onslaught of background noise.
