This! And I would add: Do enough research to know what you want. Get that. Any compromise of that approach will result in you getting rid of the compromise guitar, sooner or later, to get what you wanted all along. Life is short.

This, This, This!!!!

This is the quote that should "auto populate" whenever someone asks a question on which guitar to buy. It should "auto-populate" twice when the question starts out as, "I really want to buy a "Brand X" but was thinking maybe....."

If your heart & soul wants "Brand X", then as Rob has stated, your compromise guitar will leave you unfulfilled and now you will be further away from that guitar you wanted.

I nominate Rob's response for "QUOTE OF 2017" and can we have this as a "sticky" for "What guitar should I buy?" questions???!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

I own 6 archtops four of wich are heritage, the shorter scaled 575 with the,Spruce in definitly perfect for Joe Pass Style, his more intricate work can be imulated on the parallel braced Spruce top 575,no doubt .but if you ain't into going over the top imitating his sound, any fine archtop will do.

I am trying hard to avoid the "bought a Gibby because it's a Gibby" theme. The main issue is I don't have any of either nearby to try! That's the beauty of a forum; hoping to find someone with the expertise you are needing. :D

Drove an hour to the "local" shop with Heritages according to Heritage's website... they're a new dealer and haven't even gotten one in yet, oops.

Found a 175 for sale that's cheaper than all the 575's so it might be crap but I'm hoping to go check it out this weekend.

There is a Heritage dealer ~2 hours away that I should be able to get to soon!

Well, I am a big fan of Rob's playing and he is a close friend. I also know his band mates well and think they are a killer band.

But that doesn't overshadow the fact that his post about "Do enough research to know what you want. Get that. Any compromise of that approach will result in you getting rid of the compromise guitar, sooner or later, to get what you wanted all along. Life is short" exactly 100% accurate and perfect advice.

My apologies John. Just trying to be a little playful. I feel very similar about you've written here.

Would you expect anything less from an English Professor? I wouldn't!

Don't be distracted by Gitfiddler's (awesome) eye candy. One of his earliest posts mentioned the Gibson Herb Ellis (ES-165), which is (on the earlier models) pretty much a single pickup ES-175. Can't remember if it was Joe Pass who said one pickup was all you need. :) And while Joe could make a cigar box guitar sound great, his classic sound can be approximated very nicely with a ES-165, and they are typically MUCH less expensive than the two pickup (and more iconic) ES-175. I went through about a dozen 16" laminated archtops before finding this out: Nothing sounds like an ES-175 as much as an ES-175/165. The Epiphone ES-175 Premium is pretty nice though, and you should play one if you can find it. Less than half of the Gibson ES-165 price, and a really good take on the sound. Totally my experience, but spent a lot of time on this. In hindsight, should have just bought a new ES-175. :)

Hold out for a 575 spruce top with a medium C neck, mahogany bodyou and neck,Seth lovers, that what I use to fly joe, pyramid Plat wound strings...

i have one like this (H575MH) and it is my favorite guitar i have every played in all my life. i use flat wounds and a Benedetto B6 pickup in it. it is sublime and versatile. I can get everything from Joe Pass to George Benson tones out of it.

I like my spruce top a whole lot too. Mine is maple back and sides and for lots of reasons it has become my #1 for jazz.

I've had two 175's and liked both, still have one of them, but hardly ever touch it now.

Alright...

It's currently between:

a 1979 ES-175 for $2300 that I can go see in person on Sunday. Very nice old guy that has 8 guitars and is selling a few to make his wife happy it sounds!
But, it's the "not preferred" years as has been mentioned in other threads. I seriously don't want to regret buying it as I'd be buying it just because it's what Joe played (but isn't even really the same as his were the older ones)...

a 2003 H-575 for $1800 that I can't see in person - amber (not my favorite), ebony fretboard (nice), dots (I prefer the fancy inlay), sperzel tuners and alnico shallers golden 50 pickups (I know zero about either of these last two things other than that's different than the new ones).

I think both are good deals as in, I won't lose my money if I don't love them and want to sell/trade for something different? Is the 1979 a good enough deal to just go for it and sell it in 6 months if I don't love it? Is the 575 a good enough deal to try it instead because it's a lot better quality (most likely)? I definitely can't afford the new ones from Wolfe especially as I'd prefer to order one with fancy fretboard inlays instead of dots, ha ha!

Do they come around used 575 customs enough that I just need to wait and I'll find the color/finish I like? Side note, the two dealerships for Heritage within a few hours have both quit carrying Heritage's so I can't see one in person first. :( I do have an appointment to meet the 1979 this Sunday though! Give me your input you kind people you! :occasion14:

You are correct, stating that 575's come up fairly regularly on the used market. 'Customs' are a bit more rare, but are available.

Check Reverb 'sales history' for each model. They give a pretty good idea of used sale prices and trends.

Be patient. Just the right 575 or ES175 will come your way.
