H150 Gold Top String Change

Probably, no it was, the best 150 I ever owned.  Light weight, resonate, and even tone across all the strings.  Really an amazing guitar.

5 months old?  I just changed my H535 strings, which had been on just over 2 years!  Still sounded OK, just a tiny bit dull.  Makes a difference, I guess, if they don't get much use.

I bought this H150 Gold Top from John last year and picked it up from him at PSP 10. The strings wouldn't hold tune last week, so time for a change. The strings were at least 5 months old.

Faber strikes again!  But she's backwards, which is not a problem, I suppose, if your bridge pup is lower than the saddle adjustment screws.

Very nice!

No that's not backward.  It is like the vintage correct orginal ABR-1 bridges, it the Nashville junk that is backward.

Well, to each his own.  Live and Let Live.  YMMV.  etc. etc.  I find it much easier to have the adjustment screws facing the stop tail.

Oh, I completely understand it's a personal choice.  But I thought when you replied that Richard's Faber bridge was "backward" that you were either joking or didn't know that the original ABR (and all the ABR bridges even up today) face with the screws toward the headstock.  The ABR bridge has worked, functioned, and looked that way since 1954/1955.  I exclusively have had Faber locking ABRs on all my guitars for about 6-8 years now (along with other ABR TOM bridges) purposely replacing all guitars with Nashville or Schaller hardware and never had a problem reaching the intonation screws.  Faber was trying to make their locking ABR bridges look like the original/vintage ABR that has been around since 1954-55, but with more modern features & performance.

I guess I just didn't understand your comment about Richard's guitar as having a "backwards" bridge (like it was on backwards, which it is not).  Personally, I can't stand the Nashville hardware.

But like you said, to each his own.

I have a lot of faith in John's ears, and his studious approach to every last detail.  I've played all of his guitars and amps, and they are, without exception, fabulous.  So, to strings.  Maybe a year-or-so ago he advocated for D'Addario NYXL's.  So, always late to any party, I began using them a month or two ago.  Love them!  They sound really good, really balanced between punch and clarity (I'm intentionally not using the word "bright").  Of course, now that I've been converted, John's been touting the Throbak strings; says they're demonstrably better than the NYXL's.  Love to hear your take, Richard, and that of anyone else who cares to chime in.  And just for the record, I change strings on my three working guitars about once a month.

Thanks for asking Slate. My take is like all things ThroBak, their strings are Fab. I change strings so infrequently that the old strings are rubbish and it's impossible to recall how they sound when new. Your guitar, your amp, your fingers and your environment are different from mine so only you can judge how ThroBak strings sound in your situation but I recommend you give them a try.

Yes, I was joking.

Thanks for clearing that up John. I just checked online, and the only Gibson guitar I've ever owned (1961 SG Les Paul), has the bridge screws facing the pickup not backwards with the screws facing the stoptail/tremelo.

All Gibson guitars with ABR bridges will have the screws facing the headstock.  It's been that way (with Gibson & ABR bridges) since 1954/1955.

Do the Throbak strings have colored ball ends like D'Addario?

Nope, you actual have to decide the difference between the Low E (.46) and the High E (.10). LOL

So your strings have to verbally talk to you when they need changed?

If they talk to you (in actual words), I can offer one of the anti-psychotic drugs I sell.  Do you prefer a tablet or an injection?

Well, you are partly correct.  About 10 years ago I did sell Viagra.
