My "new" 1986 H140 arrived today - pretty pleased with it.  It's a lot cleaner than I expected it to be - pleasant surprise.  I have a couple of question though:

1) Headstock is stamped BCN which I assume means it a second - but I can't find anything wrong with it.

2) There is a mini-toggle switch appears to be original but I can't seem to find another picture with one - could be a one-off?  Coil tap maybe??  Gets louder when it is in the up position.  The guy that I bought it from said it was there when he got it in 1995 and said the guy told him it was original.

Finally, not the best picture of the headstock but you can see the BCN stamped (on a slant) on the headstock above the serial number.

Pop on that link.

  • BGN: When you find these three letters pressed into the wood (again, not ink stamped) on an instrument, it indicates a factory "bargain" instrument. It has been rumored that these are instruments that have mechanical or structural defects that prevent them from being classified as a factory second, but still remain playable for the most part. Some stories have surfaced that employees are given the opportunity to purchase instruments directly, and that those instruments are also stamped with the "BGN" marking.

"it has been rumored" and "some stories have surfaced" that both BGN and 2 simply indicate a that guitar is not up to standards. I have a BGN with stain flaws on the sides of the headstock. Mechanically and structurally sound in every way.

Enjoy your H-140!

Congratulations. That is a beauty!

Sure has been a lot of H-140 threads lately. Love it. Their first model.
