It is supposed to improve tone and eliminate string breakage. Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, etc. use this method. Just wondering if anyone here does that on their Heritages. I have a H150P. backline Posted May 12, 2009 Share Posted May 12, 2009 Couldn't do it on my H-140 with the big ol' Schaller tailpiece, but did it all the time with my Les Pauls. I think it started because with an ABR-1 bridge, if you screw down the tailpiece it put so much downforce on the bridge they'd collapse and you had to re-arc them. Later, they beefed up the Nashville bridge so it wasn't a problem with those. I like the top wrap so I can srew the tailpiece down tight for sustain without crushing an ABR-1.
