Some of the Heritages, at least arches, have the guard trimmed to fit wherever the pups end up. The 140s, 150s and other solid bodies might be consistent enough that no fitting is needed. I do think a wooden guard adds a lot to the look of a guitar. I'm playing a Millie right now that looks so naked I want to toss her a towel. From a practical standpoint, I anchor on a guard.
