Millie in the hospital

Took the M2k in to get some work done at neely guitars in hollywood yesterday. David is going to swap out the schaller for the stop/tuna that brent was kind enough to get me from kzoo. He is also going to do a pro setup, cut the slots for the tuna bridge, check and dress frets and smooth out the rough workmanship on the fretboard (file marks left on the board from kzoo. Then he said he will polish the guitar and all the hardware up for me. Can't wait. After playing it for a few minutes he told me it was going to be my all time favorite guitar when he was done and expect 200% improvement. We shall see. This guy does setups and repairs for a very impressive list of clients and came highly recommended. I can't wait :)

Then I took a tour of a few of the guitar row shops in the area, his shop is above the mesa boogie store. I went in there and they had some amazing beautiful guitars, and of course the over priced new mesa line of amps. Across the street is a vintage guitar store that had a very nice array of used guitars and amps. A lot of the guitars were actually priced competitively, which surprised me. I guess with the guitar-get and sam-ass down the block they have to compete. Then I hit the carvin store and f'd around with some of their guitar porn and amps. I worked out one of their nomad amps for about a half hour and also a couple others. I was not real impressed. Sounds pretty much like my music man, so why spend the bucks. Reinforced my decision to try to get my hands on a ceriatone overtone.

I will post new porn when the millie gets back to me in a couple weeks.

I envy you ..... >:(  .... Guitar Centre, Sam Ash, Mesa Boogie, Carvin ... :'(

In complete contrast I was in a guitar store in a neighbouring town yesterday, a small family business that sells anything and everything.

Their stock consisted of Epis and Aria electrics and Hohner and lesser acoustics.

Of that only 2 were lefty, both cheap acoustics (aka "planks").

The amp lineup was well ... totally non descript, not even a cheap Fender, Marshall or Vox.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread ....

Hope your Millie comes back ready to rock, I have an Ultra myself and they are indeed a special breed of guitar.

Let me tell you Southpaw, some of your people who settled here in the colonies are not doing any better than you are.  My first thought was,  "is he talking about guitar stores?"  All the stores around have crap!

There's a ton of shops up there on sunset blvd. I stay as far away from there as possible for obvious reasons. Gotta keep the junkie out da hood, you know. I had my wife with me so I was "safe". The sam ass and gmart I won't even venture into unless I am desperate for strings or a tube or something immediate.

It's sharp!  I'll bet it plays well too.

What is it with cats and cases?

Yours has an access plate!!! I'm jealous. Is it an arched back or flat? Can't tell from the pics. Wish my Millie had an access plate.

My Standard Ultra has an access plate, and a flat back.

I thought they all had this configuration. ???

My Millie is supposed to just be a standard 'ol M2K SAE. Has dots & Schallers. But the back is arched and I'm pretty sure the top is carved, not laminate. And no access plate. Which is cool, yet at the same time confounding! I think I want to swap the treble pup, but the lack of access to the controls is making me rethink that.

Tulk, looks like you scored. The M2K's are flat back and I can't really say if it's laminate or not, haven't really gotten in there to look. You should post up pics showing us the back of that dog.

Unfortunately, the millie has no health coverage, like millions and millions of other american made guitars. And I will tell you, if you want to talk about inflation, let's say the cost of a setup, fret dress and other tech work is up over 100% from where it was in 2001 when I last had someone touch an electric guitar of mine. Of course, I think the surgeon in this case was more highly qualified. Reminds me why I have always done my own tech stuff. I am kind of afraid to do any serious work on a decent guitar as I don't want to goof it up. THe SG build should provide me with some valuable lessons in guitar techery
