My Peavey VK II head can go cab-less, supposedly it sounds really good since Peavey developed the technology because Joe Satriani requested it. (Even though Marshall took Satches endorsement away from Peavey). I also have a Jet City 2x12 Cab that has an XLR output for going straight to a cab. I've never really tried it, but who knows. I guess it all depends how good your sound guy is and if he can get you a monitor level you like and mix with the band correctly. *edit* I believe the last Premier Guitar Rig-Rundown with Billy Gibbons, he doesn't use amp cabinets anymore, but very high tech cab simulators. I think it was because the guys didn't think it sounded very good. The explanation I saw later is that they were going to fly a Mesa engineer to London to make sure the unit wasn't defective and make sure that they were utilizing it properly. Yes, but you can use a smaller cabinet just as a monitor or bury it in an iso-cab, even off the stage if you like.. The Valveking II, you do not need a cabinet. The Valveking II, you do not need a cabinet. Well, in my case, having to lug the cab anyway defeats the purpose (which is to avoid the 4 floors of pain). From the Internet research I have done, it looks like there are either some super fancy units from two-notes or Rivera that ask for something in the neighborhood of a grand or the mesa cabclone that is passive and costs 300 bucks. gpuma Posted October 25, 2014 Author Share Posted October 25, 2014 Well, I am a Boogie fan boy but I have to say that either my unit is defective or Mesa really f-ed up big time with these things. I have tried it so far only through my usb interface and through the headphones. I found it so bad that i feel I have been taken advantage of for my brand loyalty. My mark V has as much headroom as any other amp on the planet and yet I wasn't able to get a decent clean out of it. I still have to try it over a 'live' setting through a PA but I am tempted to just return it. What a disappointment! JeffB Posted October 25, 2014 Share Posted October 25, 2014 I am struggling to get my head around Mesa flying someone to the UK from the US to find out what the problem is with a us$299 product. Sounds a bit like bs. I think they would just open another box and try that. If there was still a problem then mesa would send them one that they knew worked. Maybe there is some kind of language barrier and they couldnt communicate over phone or maybe skype was down. Really mixed reviews on the cab clone. Its tough to know with out trying it. On the one hand some people think its great and others think its pretty bad. When it gets here next week I guess I will find out for myself.
