Under the Hood: Carr Rambler

I'm intrigued - what's inside the big canister shape next to the PT? Rectifier?

That's the water tower from where the amp draws for the sweet, dripping tone.

Where's the money shot? If you're going to tempt us with amp porn, you must, by law, show the wires inside the chassis.

LOL

When talking to Streve Carr about speaker swap procedure on this amp he said to leave the chassis attached to the back panel and remove it as an assembly. So no money shot for you!

those are excellent amps!!

a good buddy of mine has been watching for one used, to show up...is that wizard the stock speaker?

It is a truly amazing amp. Wizard is the stock speaker for this era (2006) and is a little mid/high voiced (bright) for my use, so I am putting in a Cannabis Rex to see if that makes it just right for me. If so, it will probably never be for sale. If not, this one may come on the market.

Carr's tech guy warned me that the stock Analysis Plus speaker cable is a real pain to un-solder if you are not experienced with it. He recommended changing it out. I figured, sure, I can do it. He was right. i couldn't even get it unattached cleanly and I gave up after a while so I didn't get to finish the job. Need to order a new speaker cable.

With the lid off?

I am pushing the limits of my skill set to do the speaker change myself. i am nervous to go further lest i accidentally defile this fabulous instrument. i would never forgive myself.

Well, at least you're doing it. Well done - you'll get it back more quickly and you'll save some cash. Better still, next time you'll choose something a little more taxing and feel even better for doing it.

I think my joke fell flat - don't you call the toilet 'the can' in the US? ;)

We call it the lue. It's not unusual to hear: "Are you in the que for the lue?"

Nope. Its the "head". Or the "library". Or the "reading room".

Sorry the amp wasn't good right out of the box. Maybe the speaker will improve it for you. Thought I would throw in a pic of my speaker setup. I have considered different speakers for it, but have been happy with these, so decided to leave well enough alone.

Amp is great. just wanted to try to darken it a little and fill out the bottom that the wizard de-emphasizes. do you have a 2x12 Rambler? i bet those Jensens sound great.

No, it is 2 10" speakers. I really do like the sound of this amp for my playing. I still spend most of my time on the Two Rock Studio 35 which I really like. I also just purchased a Fender Princeton Reverb II which is due to be delivered by UPS today. I'm hoping it isn't a duplicate of the Rambler, We shall see.

I'm glad you are happy with your Rambler, they are a super amp. Hopefully a speaker change will get it where you want to be.

That 2x10 Rambler must be awesome. I considered that option, but really wanted to stay under 40 lbs. bad back and small car.

I'll be interested to hear about the Princeton Reverb II. I've always wanted to play on.

Just unpacked the PRII and let her rip. I don't know what it is, but this is my sound. I totally fell in love. There is something about the way it reproduces the attack on the strings or something, I wish I could describe it better, I suck at describing tones. But I can clearly hear it. I need to get someone else over here it see if they hear what I hear, or is it just my wierd ears. But back to the PRII, it is really excellent, a friend of mine has a Deluxe Reverb II that I also fell in love with, I don't think any other amp I have heard has that sound.

Pegleg,

It sounds like you and I have exactly the same taste in amps. I, too, love the Two Rock Amps, the Carr, and recently fell in love with Princeton Reverb. I like the warm sound it produces and am looking to possibly getting a VSA 112 someday (A pretty decent clone of the Princeton).
