H157 Goldtop with triple pickups arrived

Recommended Posts

This is a somewhat heavier guitar at 10.6 lbs but still more than a pound lighter than my previous triple pup H157.

It was made in 2002. The back is a single piece. The neck is a 59ish carve.

The top finish is an old style gold, which is less garish.

I haven't plugged it in yet.

The toggles are coil splits. I don't know how the rest of the controls work.

This guitar will be fun.

I got to check it out. It has the usual 3 pup configuration. The toggle switch is bridge -- bridge and middle -- neck. The mini-toggles split each of the pups. The pots are modern wired.

The neck and action are good. This doesn't have the fattest neck I've played, but it's quite substantial.

I haven't decided yet how to change the electronics. Please post any ideas. I'm thinking of switching to asymmetrically wound pups like Unbuckers that can be split without the single coil hum.

Here are some pix:

Idea:

I have a guitar I built from Warmoth parts with three humbuckers. It has three toggles, one for ach pickup. The toggles each have three positions and toggle each pickup from parallel to split to series - very cool, gives a Filtertron to single coils to humbucker vibe!

Then, I find it a waste to have three pickups but only a threeway switch and I would probably think of something to get the various pickup combinations in a logical order. My custom guitar has a stratocaster five way switch for that. This is obviously out of the question for your guitar. But maybe the threeway switch can be wired to give you each pickup separately and then you can use push pulls to engage the others ... I'm sure there are many ideas on the internet. .... Very cool guitar, enjoy!

I had an all gold 535 that I sold to a close friend. It had an old style color too. Very nice ain't it? I replaced the black pup rings with cream and the control knobs to the top hat style. It made that guitar look so cool. Of course I need the cool look because I can't play for squat.

Just do the Mickey Baker / ES-3 mod. When any pick up volume is all the way down, it's out of the circuit. You already have toggles to split coils.

You won't have separate tone knobs though - is there such a thing as push pull pots that act as a volume and tone control - sort of a 2 in 1 deal?
