  4. I can't remember who built their jazz floater pickups before? Someone local to Kalamazoo? they sounded good. I think they were all Humbuckers? I don't think the Schaller pickup design would work as a floater, it's too deep. Maybe if you got rid of the cover & modded the baseplate.

  10. What an excellent segment: I watched the whole thing Hell of an introduction pretty funny great interview! Rich said something that has resonated with me for some time about guitars: "functional art" Much of a guitar's beauty is based on functional design. It's true: they are objects to be admired. But they go beyond drawings, paintings or most sculptures etc. A musical instrument is a creative tool to be used, to be inspired by, to play, and to generate new ideas. Or just rehash "hang on sloopy" to your hearts content. It's all good.

  14. I dunno, I have both Pickguards are nice once you get your picking hand familiar with it & it works as a guide, to orient your playing without needing to look at your hand. Likewise without: I get used to using the pickup rings instead, as a guide to rest a finger on. Actual funcionality as a pickguard: It would make more sense to me to be ABOVE the strings, as I tend to hit the body more above the low E string, while using a pick. Not having a pickguard & all that free air kind of feels like "going commando" and not wearing any underwear. Sort of liberating in a way I don't know if I have a preference. I do really like the old wooden pickguards Heritage used to use.
  15. nice H550's in this thread! A lot of players who use heavier strings tune down to make it easier to bend. SRV famously, probably inspired by Hendrix

I would have said exactly the same thing to any friend I was having that discussion with. Not only that, but I went to the effort of additional details that likely affect your perception of sound & volume. You are welcome.
