Amp kit build....Trinity Tramp

LK155

Recommended Posts

Received my amp kit this week and just got it unpacked.

This is a very interesting design. One preamp tube, one power tube.

Power tube can be a 6V6, 6L6, KT66, EL34, 6CA7, or KT77. Bias switch on the back panel.

Switched Fender Tweed or Marshall style tone stack, with bass and treble pots.

Fat/thin switch and power attenuator. Master volume. 4/8/16 ohm output selector. Two speaker outputs.

Decent size transformers from Heyboer.

Here's a link to the Trinity site....

This amp is available in either combo or head configuration (tubes either sit horizontally or vertically).

I chose the head version, and ordered a cabinet at the same time.

When you deal with Trinity Amps, you speak with Stephen, who seems to be the owner, CEO, designer, builder, and cabinet maker all in one.

So here's what I have so far........

Here's the cab unfinished.....(Trinity likes to keep customers appraised of progress by emailing pictures as work gets done)....

And the back of the cab a few hours later.............

I bought Grubber's Mesa 1x12 cab specifically for this project, and picked it up at PSP.

One of the tolex choices for the amp cab was 'Mesa wrinkle', which is a perfect match. With the black piping and black corners, this amp cab looks just fine sitting on the Mesa speaker.....

And one final picture to give you an idea of the overall size........

Obviously, these pictures just show the cab with an empty chassis. I was relieved to notice that all the dials go to 11.

Will try to update this as progress is made. Looks like fun.

Glad to see another of us becoming an amp builder :) I'll be keeping a close eye on the thread and hope you have lots of fun building and playing it.

One last thing - you need an 'L' mug and a decent tablecloth ;)

Looks like a fun project. You did a great job on the tolex.

Um, well, no.

I didn't do the tolex. Trinity shipped the cab to me completely finished.

Classic tone transformers?

Sorry, Lance, I don't know what this means.

Maybe the specs for the Tramp on Trinity's website would tell you that.

that is cool...and it comes with a muffin tray!!!

See, this is how urban myths get started.

That's MY muffin tray.

Let me rephrase that.....that's MARG's muffin tray.

It did NOT come with the kit.

Cheesh.

I just thought it might help keep things semi-organized.

Seriously though, how many hours would it take to build a kit like this ?

Alleged to be about 16 hours.

Last winter Trinity Amps and Guitars Canada put on a 'Build-a-Tramp-Kit' weekend in Toronto. I think they had about 12 to 15 attendees, and several of them had working amps at the end of the second day.

I really wanted to attend that one, but just couldn't make my schedule work.

Sorry, H, don't have a decent tablecloth. Have to make do with a 60 year-old embroidered pillowcase.

And no 'L' mug. Even better.....a PSP1 HOC mug.

Six days later and not much progress...it's difficult to work on this when I'm working away from home several days in a row.

Anyway, some of the hardware is in place, and the beginning of the wiring. Long way to go yet.

Looks like "Prince spaghetti day!"

I admire the fortitude of those who can tackle these builds. The closest I ever came was the custom Soldano build "Nancy." She sure is sweet and never shocked me or let the smoke out.

Please do keep us abreast of your exploits LK155 :downtown:

It's fun to see an heirloom in the making.

Looking good. Do the different colour wires come cut to length ?

As you can see in the pix, the wires from the transformers are all really long and will get trimmed as they're installed.

The coloured wires in the baggie are not cut to length. In fact most of the instructions do not provide lengths...you need to figure it out for each one.

Quite a hardship. You even have to strip the insulation off the ends before soldering!

Glad to see you have your work surface sorted out ;) Also glad to see you resisted the temptation to wire up the main board first!

Keep up the good work :)
