HANGAR18
why not gold? A story I found to be humorous, told to me by a guy who said he heard it from Ted McCarty directly... He explained the reason why the guitars we think of as the original Les Pauls were painted gold (ie Goldtops). Back in that day, it was decided that there was something really great about the idea of having a Mahogany body with a slab of Maple on top of it. But back then, it was a top secret propriatary trade secret and they didn't want Leo Fender to learn what they were doing. Today, everyone knows how a Les Paul style guitar is made but back then, they made the first Les Pauls with a Goldtop finish because they wanted to hide the "technology". And secondly I suppose because metallic Gold was a very trendy color back in the world of the 50's.
SouthpawGuy
I thought it was because gold / yellow stood out more on black and white TV ? Hence the finish "TV yellow".
Spectrum13
And two years after this photo Marv started sanding bodies. 30 years after the photo Gibson left for Nashville and Heritage started up. Sixty years after this photo the Black Beauty Custom Staple becomes our 30th annversery Heritage. Les and Ted were thinking this 54 Custom would one up that new Stratocaster Leo designed. Little did they know.
